This time, it is really a pleasure to feature and have the LifeBuff questions answered by Thomas Bergersen, Norwegian composer, multi-instrumentalist, and the co-founder of Two Steps From Hell.

His compositions have been featured in many motion picture campaigns, such as Avatar, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Twilight Saga, The Chronicles of Narnia, Harry Potter, Da Vinci Code, The Mummy, The Dark Knight and hundreds more.

You can check out his latest album “American Dream” on Apple Music, Amazon, and Spotify

1. What do you do to keep a sane mind in the audio industry?

Thomas: I never felt like I was part of any industry, and I definitely don’t think I am sane. Looking back I am clearly insane to have put in the kind of hours I have over the years. Now I try to take extended breaks and travel to get away from my studio. When I come back I usually have some fresh ideas.

2. How do you maintain your creativity?

Thomas: I don’t think it’s as much me maintaining my creativity as my creativity maintaining me. I need to be productive otherwise I just feel depressed and like I’m wasting time. It’s hard to find a good balance. Eating healthy, enjoying a nice day outside and exercising gives me the energy I need.

3. What was your best investment so far when it comes to the topics above?

Thomas: A peaceful environment. For me if I am distracted by any sort of emotional turmoil, external noise, phone calls, stress.. I can’t write music. I can do other things, just not music. Having a place away from the city, and a social circle that gives me positive energy definitely has helped.

Anything you want to tell the aspiring composer of today?

Thomas: I think what distinguishes a successful artist from any other is devotion. And often times not even voluntary devotion. It’s something you have to do. Something that fills the void in you. It’s almost like a drug. Self-medication for the soul. Driven by your desire to explore the limits of your own mind and capabilities as a human being.

Thank you so much, Thomas, for taking the time to answer these questions. I owe you a lot and you know it! All the best to you!
